Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary에 따르면 두 번째 문장은 올바르지 못한 예문으로 나온다.

당신이 어떤 것을 처음 또는 마지막으로 했다는 것에 대해 이야기 할 때, the first / last time (that) I ... 를 사용한다.
사실 우리가 학교에서 배운 문법으로는 두 번째 문장이 문법적으로 틀린 것은 아니다.
하지만 원어민들에게는 두 번째 문장이 어색하게 들리며 이러한 유형의 문장이 널리 사용되지 않는다고 한다.
예문 검색을 해 보아도 첫 번째 유형의 문장이 훨씬 더 많이 사용된다는 것을 알 수 있다.
우리말 "어떻게"를 표현할 때 what을 쓸 것인지, how를 쓸 것인지는 동사에 따라 달라진다.
먼저 동사 think를 사용하는 경우는 what을 쓴다.
한편 동사 feel을 사용하는 경우는 주로 how를 쓰는데 what을 써도 크게 이상하지는 않다. 다만 학교 시험에서 이런 문제가 나온다면 how를 고르는 것이 안전할 것이다.

southerly와 southern은 둘다 "남쪽의"라는 뜻을 가지고 있지만 차이가 있다.
southerly는 동적이고 southern은 정적이다. 예문을 통해 차이점을 좀더 명확히 알아보자.
blow the wind southerly(남쪽으로 바람을 불어보내다)에서 southern은 사용할 수 없다.
the Southern States of the US(미국 남부의 주들)에서 southerly는 사용할 수 없다.
위 신문기사에서와 같이 위치를 비교할 때 southern대신 southerly를 사용한다. "a more southerly place", "the most southerly point", "less southerly than Oaxaca"
다음의 예를 살펴보자. southerly와 southern의 용례를 잘 보여주고 있다.
